Cosmetics are comprised of a combination of different chemical substances derived from natural resources or synthesized ones. The term “cosmeceuticals” is sometimes used to describe cosmetic formulas. The chemicals used in cosmetics manufacture vary according to purpose and industry. Cosmetics have found their place in most people’s daily life. Many cosmetics manufacturers have emerged in the market offering skin care and hair care products.

Make-up: The History - Make-Up and It's Damage

Cosmetics have evolved as a world wide trade since the mid-20th century. Cosmetics contain various ingredients such as botanicals, fragrance, preservatives, colorants, dyes, binders, moisturizers, and occlusives. Lipstick and gloss made up of the same ingredients are commonly available in cosmetic shops. Facial lotions and creams are also a good example of cosmetics. These are usually sold in retail stores, mass marketers, and beauty outlets. Cosmetics are not regulated in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

The major cosmetics companies produce and distribute a variety of cosmetics. The reason for this is to keep the manufacturing cost low, but it has serious repercussions on the quality and safety of the cosmetics being produced. Cosmetics are considered to be the most popularly applied skin product. With a large number of cosmetics products available in the market, it can be difficult knowing which one will work best for your skin.

The major cosmetics industry is highly dependent on the processing of raw materials and the use of additives and preservatives. Processing raw materials can either be chemical or mechanical. Synthetic chemicals are usually produced by means of petrochemicals. The petrochemical industry produces a wide range of chemicals such as methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, etc. It is believed that almost all of the US hazardous chemicals come from the petrochemicals industry. Most cosmetic products do not contain any of the hazardous chemicals mentioned above but instead they contain hazardous parabens, dioxane, and artificial fragrance.

Preservatives are added to cosmetics products as a means of preventing harmful enzymes from breaking down the ingredients and damaging the skin. However, some preservatives are more effective than others. A natural preservative such as vitamin E is considered to be as effective as one of the artificial preservatives. Cosmetic companies usually include parades in their products as it is cheaper than synthetic preservatives. However, many dermatologists state that parabens are toxic to humans.

There is an active ingredient called parabens in most cosmetics products and it is believed to be a very safe chemical. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), parabens are found in a minimum amount in products that are marketed for children under the age of six. However, this is still not enough to define cosmetics. The other common chemical that is found in cosmetics is fragrance. However, even though fragrance may not have any direct effect on the human body, there is a great risk when using fragrances in the form of perfume or Cologne.
